Script lettering on both ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet in mustard yellow flats stand on a wooden floor, viewed from above. Dark script lettering runs up the inside of both ankles, with only parts of the words visible because the lines are cut off by the shoes and the frame. The linework is smooth and even, and the ink is a single dark tone with no colour. The warm wood and yellow shoes dominate the composition, with the tattoos as a clear secondary focus.

Ada had written the same question on three envelopes before the kettle boiled, and the kettle was not the only thing going cold above the chandler's. Out past the breakwater the tide was swinging the fishing boats against their ropes, and gulls on the slipway fought over a split crab pot. She set the pen down, picked it up again, and wrote Tom's name at the top of a clean sheet as if he might be sitting across the table.

"Dear Tom, the coaster left on Tuesday's tide and your oilskin is still hanging on the back of the door, so I suppose you have gone out in your shirt, which will serve you right. Mrs Pascoe says the Breton boats are running late and the harbour master has put the price of paraffin up again. Where are you going, I keep asking, and no one at the quay can tell me. Write when you reach a port that has a post office with a proper stamp."
Her brother's answer came nine days later, folded inside a seaman's chandlery bill and smelling of diesel and wet rope. The handwriting was a sailor's scrawl, all hooks and slant. "Ada, we put in at Roscoff for the fog and I walked the front in the dark. Where have you been all this time? I have looked for the lamp on the Head every night and it is always lit, which is how I know you are still there."
She read it twice standing at the window, then took the stub of pencil from the drawer and wrote the reply on the back of the bill. She told him about the paraffin and the crab pot and the oilskin, and at the bottom she wrote only the word here, then pinned the sheet to the board by the door where the tide tables hung.
