The glitter shoes arrived on a Thursday, gold-flecked flats for a girl leaving for Lisbon at dawn. Their sole had split clean across. When he lifted one under the lamp, the cat stood up, tail raised like a question mark, and walked across the bench to press a single red bead of sealing wax against the stitching. Mr Okonedo had never seen wax do that.

He mended the sole with waxed thread and the cat's approval, which took the form of a slow blink. By morning the shop smelled of rain and the flats were gone from the shelf. Nobody came to collect them, but on the wet pavement outside, a line of glitter ran down towards the harbour, bright as spilled stars.

He locked up, put the kettle on, and found the cat asleep in an empty shoe box, one black paw tucked under, its tail still up as if it had only just come home.
