Ines had kept the relay log for six years on Halvard Ridge, where a message from Earth took eleven minutes to arrive and another eleven to get an answer back. She had stopped minding the wait. What she could not stop doing was writing her replies longhand on the station's cheap cream paper, then reading them aloud to the empty mess before sealing them into the courier canister.

The canister went out on the Thursday freight run. Her sister Marta, who lived in the dome city of Prandtl Basin, wrote back in a looping hand that the postal drones had lost their way twice that season. Marta's letters always began mid-thought, as if she had been talking to Ines all morning and had only now remembered to put it down. This one began: "You told me distance was only arithmetic."

Ines had said that. She had said it the day Marta left, standing in a hangar that smelled of coolant, trying to make a joke of it. Now she sat with the paper flat under the lamp and worked out the sums again: the lag, the freight schedule, the years. None of it came to much. Each line she wrote still reached its reader whole, the loops intact, the capitals decorated the way their mother had taught them at the kitchen table.

She folded the page, sealed it, and went to the window where the ridge fell away into grey dust. Marta's answer would take three weeks. Ines wrote the date at the top of a fresh sheet, underlined it twice, and began: "Dear Marta, the arithmetic is wrong."
