Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the side of the torso, just above the hip, with a red bikini top and strap crossing the frame. The image is black and grey, with soft natural lighting and the tattoo placed in the lower half of the frame.

Dear Ruth, the post boat came in on Tuesday with your parcel, and I have read your letter four times over the kettle, which Harold says is a poor use of a kettle. The thing you will want to hear is about the boy from the mainland who came with the telegraph men in March. He drew on the back of his cuff while he waited for the boat, two little hearts shaded in pencil, one tucked behind the other like a pair of sleeping hens. I asked him what they were for and he only said they were for the people who would wait for him. I thought that a strange answer until the storm took the wire down on Thursday and we sat three nights by the lamp with no word from anyone.
He is gone now, back over on the Friday boat, and the cuff is in my apron pocket because I forgot to give it back. I have written the same words on the inside of the pantry door in pencil, the way you used to write the shopping list. My loves. Nothing more, just that. Harold asked whose they were and I said, mostly, the ones who come home in the end.
Write soon. Tell me if the hens at your mother's still will not lay in the byre, and whether you have finally taken the blue dress to the seamstress in town.
Your affectionate sister, Margaret
