Black ink script tattoos reading Respect, Loyalty and Love across three fingers, with a small outlined diamond on the back of the hand.

Respect, loyalty and love script on fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a hand with the words Respect, Loyalty and Love written in cursive script across the fingers, with Respect on the little finger, Loyalty on the ring finger and Love on the middle finger. A small diamond outline sits on the back of the hand below the knuckles. The linework is fine and mostly black with some grey softness, and the plain skin tone and pale background keep the focus on the lettering.

Dear Maureen,

The night bus let me off at the bottom of Briggate at a quarter to two, and the rain had settled into that fine kind that gets under a collar. I'd come to sort the stock before the solicitor's letters got any worse, which is how I ended up on the back step with the shop key in my fist, reading the rota Dad had pinned inside the door. Every Thursday in his capitals: CHECK THE BLUE TRAYS. CHECK THE SOLDER. LEAVE THE LIGHT ON FOR THE LOST ONES.

Inside, the workshop still smelt of pumice and burnt matches. I found the tray he meant, a row of plain gold bands, and beneath them a small paper packet with the name Corinne written in his looping hand. Inside was a single old-cut diamond, and on the fold he had sketched its outline in pencil so I'd know which setting it wanted. Nobody had ever collected it. He'd been waiting on a phone call that never came.

I sat with it under the lamp until the sky over the Corn Exchange went grey. You'd have told me to ring the number on the card, so at seven I did. A woman answered with the telly going behind her. She said Corinne had moved to Hull years back and didn't want the thing, laughed, not unkindly, and asked me to keep it. So it's in the window now, next to his old magnifier, with the tag turned to the glass.

Come up at Easter. The light's on and the trays are sorted.

Love, Sam
