Script quote on upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script tattoo reading "Don't forget to love yourself" across two lines, placed on the upper chest near the collarbone. The lettering uses fine, flowing strokes in black ink with no shading or colour. The text sits centrally in the frame against softly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mam has stopped speaking to the kettle since you left, so I've taken over the whistling. The bus from Market Harborough still runs late on Thursdays, and Mr Pryce at the chemist's asks after you every time I collect Dad's tonic, as though you'd gone to sea rather than to a typing pool in Holborn.

Your last letter came smelling of Woodbines and cheap ink, and I read it twice at the sink before I could make out the bit where you said you'd cried on the Central Line. Don't be ashamed of that. Nobody in London looks up from the Evening Standard long enough to notice, and I'd rather you wept on a train than pretended to the girls in the office that everything was grand.

I'm writing because I found something in the back of Grandmother's almanac while I was airing the blankets. Tucked between February and March, in pencil gone silver with age, she'd written Don't forget to love yourself in that wobbly hand of hers. Beneath it she'd drawn a little pair of scissors, the way she always did when she meant to cut something out of her life and never managed it.

I've copied it out on the back of your birthday card, which is on the mantel now where Mam can see it. I know you'll think it's soppy. I thought so too, until I saw she'd gone over the word yourself twice, hard enough to dent the paper. Write back soon, and tell me what you're eating, because I can't believe a girl from Corby is living on digestives.
