Script quote and blue flower on a foot

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A black script quote reads "Not all those who wander are lost" across the top of a foot, with the lettering in a smooth, even fine-line style. Below and to the right, a stylised blue flower with teal shading sits on a thin grey-blue vine with curling tendrils and small swirls. The photo is taken at an angle against a dark tiled floor, with the foot filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, boy, the fire has more in it than you think. You want to know why Brother Anselm came back from the coast road with his sandals in his hand and no map in his satchel? I will tell you, but you must not interrupt, for I tell it only once a winter.

The road to the coast was not a road then, only a line of trodden chalk between the hedges, and he walked it for nine days with a copy of the abbey's great chart folded inside his habit. He had drawn half of that chart himself. Every ridge and ford in it was his hand, and he was proud of that, which is a sin I confess on his behalf. On the ninth day the chalk gave out at a stream with no bridge and a blue flower growing thick along its banks, five petals like little stars, and he stood there and found, to his great annoyance, that the chart could not tell him where he was standing.

Brother Anselm sat down on a stone and wrote a letter to nobody. He wrote it in the good ink, the one we keep for the psalters, and he began it with the words the old abbot once scratched above the lintel of the scriptorium door. Not all those who wander are lost, he wrote, but I confess I am.

Then he folded the chart into a boat, set it on the water, and watched it drift towards the sea. The next morning a shepherd found him cross-legged beside the stream, smiling, with the satchel empty and his feet blue with cold. He had not been lost at all, he said. He had only stopped being sure, and that was a relief he had not known he needed.
