Script words and arrow on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inside of a forearm, showing a line of handwritten script that runs diagonally up towards the right. A single arrow with feathered fletching and a pointed tip sits at the upper end of the line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the photo is taken at an angle against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The arrow came over the church wall on the feast of Saint Brannoc, when the whole of Ferrow was out at the reeds. Nobody saw the bowman. Tom Greave found it in the mud by the sluice, its feathers still dry on one side, and saw letters scratched along the shaft, small and looping, the way the schoolmistress taught the children to join their hands. He could not read them. He carried it up to the schoolhouse anyway.

Mrs Pell, who had retired to the almshouse with her spectacles on a string, held the shaft to the window and read it slowly. It said that Lally had gone across the water and would be back when the swans came in, and that whoever kept the arrow must send it on, pointing the way she had gone. Nobody in Ferrow had ever heard of a Lally. When they opened the old register, one name at the back had been crossed out, and the ink on the crossing was still wet.

They walked the arrow down the causeway through the long grass, the point always a little ahead of them, past the mill and the willow withies and the drowned chapel. Tom said afterwards that it never once turned round to look at them. At the end of the causeway stood a plank gate, and beyond it a young woman with ink on her cuffs was pinning a letter to a post for the ferryman. When she saw the arrow she laughed out loud and took it from Tom's hand without a word, as if it had been expected for years.
