Script quote and lightning bolt on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A cursive script quote runs diagonally across the top of the foot near the ankle, partly cropped at the left and right edges. A small teal shape with a yellow lightning bolt sits beside the start of the line. The lettering is solid dark navy or black with clean, even strokes, and the photo is taken straight on against a grey carpet.

Margit had the storm watch at Porthgwidden the winter the cable went down, so the readings reached her by hand. At ten past three the barometer on the hut wall dropped another tenth and she wrote it in the log in pencil, because ink ran when the damp got in.

Her brother Owen rang from the lifeboat station at half past, shouting over the diesel. He wanted to know whether the storm over Trevaunance was coming inland or out to sea. She told him what the screen showed, and what it showed was nothing she trusted. The old glass float hanging from the gate had taken a strike every winter since their father hung it there, a teal ball he had fished from the shingle the summer before he died. It had cracked once and never shattered.
At four the strike came. Blue white light turned the window into a negative, and the float on the gate flared yellow for a second, then went dark. Owen went quiet on the line. She waited with the pencil over the page until he laughed, a ragged sound, and said the boat was fine and so was the float, only scorched.
She wrote it all down anyway: wind veering south-west, gusts to nine, no damage to the station. Under that she wrote the time, four minutes past four, and underlined it twice, because the small hours were the only ones nobody checked afterwards.
