The old lord of Harrowmere had hung a bell over the ruined keep and a rule beneath it: no one laughs within these walls. For forty winters the rule held, and the castle stood silent except for wind and crows. So when Bett the goose girl came up the hill with her basket and her bare feet, the gatekeeper only shook his head, thinking her simple, and let her through.

She found the great hall open to the sky, ivy thick in the windows and nettles where the banquet tables had stood. Her geese had wandered off to the moat, the sun was warm on the broken flags, and something had been tickling her all morning. She sat down on a fallen capital and began to laugh. It started as a hiccup, then rolled out of her and bounced off the stones, up the broken towers and around the chapel arches. The swifts nesting in the walls rose all at once, and in the middle of that noise something warm lifted from her chest, folded its wings, and flew out through the window as a bird of wet pink light. Two more followed it, orange and gold, and they circled above her head, twittering like gossips.

Down in the courtyard the bell cracked in its frame. The lord came storming out in his nightshirt, shouting for the guards, but by then Bett was wiping her eyes and her heart had gone up over the valley, dipping and tumbling until the sky there was streaked in rose and marigold and river blue. He could not catch a single colour.

Bett walked home without her heart and found she felt lighter than she had all year. The villagers say the ruin still blooms in spring, and that if you climb up and sit quietly on the broken step, you will hear someone laughing, and sometimes you will find yourself doing it too.
