Script quote lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black script lettering design on a plain white background reads ..and in time, this too shall pass. The thin, flowing monoline strokes have fine hairline swashes on the capitals and descenders. The phrase runs across the centre of the frame in a single horizontal line with generous white space above and below.

The skipper said it whenever the nets came up empty, and he said it the night the Marigold lost her starboard boom somewhere off the Dogger Bank. Not to us. To the sea, I think, or to the gulls that trailed us back into Grimsby with their beaks open. Walter Pell had a voice like a foghorn with a cold, and he would drop the words like a weight over the side and then turn back to the winch without waiting to see if anyone had heard.

We had ten days of nothing after that. The fleet tied up along the Fish Dock wall, the wages sat in the ledger like stones, and the lads played cards on an upturned crate and didn't speak of home. I kept the docket from the fuel depot because it was the only clean paper aboard. Walter took it from me one evening, squinted at the stub of pencil in my pocket, and said his hand had gone to pieces with the cold. Would I write it out for him, neat, so it could go above the wheelhouse radio where he could read it at four in the morning.

I wrote it out with my tongue between my teeth. The capitals wanted to flourish and the descenders wanted to run off the edge of the paper, and I kept reining them back until the line sat level across the middle of the sheet with plenty of white above and below. Walter read it, grunted, and pinned it up with a rusted tack. Then he went out at first light with the rest of us, and the sea gave us eleven boxes of cod.

The docket is still there in my kitchen drawer, soft as cloth now, the pencil gone pale where the damp got in. I never did believe the saying. But I keep a pencil in my oilskin pocket anyway, in case the nets come up empty and someone needs to write it down.
