The ferry hut on Scarra smelt of wet rope and the paraffin heater Nell kept turned low, and on the Tuesday after the gale she found the card wedged under the lost property tin. It was cream stock, the corners soft from handling, and across the front someone had written in a looping copperplate that leaned into the wind: Don't forget to love yourself. There was no name and no date, only a small ink blot where the full stop had been pressed too hard.

She turned it over twice. The island had two hundred and eleven people on the last census, and she knew most of their handwriting from birthday cards and the tills at the shop, but not this slant or the confident tail on that final letter. She held the card to the window, where the harbour showed grey beyond the glass, and the boat for the mainland was already tied off, its engine ticking as it cooled.

Her mother had written like that, back when she still wrote letters to people across the water. Nell had not seen the hand in eleven years, not since the last boat out of Scarra in October, when she had promised she would be back by spring and had not come back at all.

She put the card in the pocket of her oilskin, locked the hut, and walked down the slipway with the wind at her back. At the rail she stopped, took it out, and read the line once more before she bought her ticket.
