Script quote reading fall down seven times
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black script lettering design on a plain white background reads Fall down seven times, stand up eight, set across two lines. The letterforms use flowing, looping strokes with thick and thin contrast, and the flourishes extend beyond the capitals and descenders. The design is shown in solid black ink with no shading or colour, and the text fills the centre of the frame.

The lamp went out at a quarter past two, and you were on the third landing with a tin of paraffin in one hand and the rail in the other when the wind tore the door from your grip. The stairs are iron and you had climbed them four hundred times, but the spiral was slick with rain and your boot found nothing. You slid to the bottom on your back and lay there counting the rivets in the ceiling, the way your mother taught you when you fell off the harbour wall as a child. Seven rivets. Then you got up.

The old keeper, Amos Pell, had a saying about the light: it is never the first winter that breaks a lamp, it is the one after, when you have forgotten how cold the glass gets. He liked to tell it with his feet on the stove and his tea going cold, and you thought him soft until the spring he went into the infirmary and came back thin and cross, climbing the stairs again with a stick. You did not fall on the eighth attempt. On the eighth, the wick caught.
By dawn the beam was sweeping over the grey water as if nothing had happened, and a fishing boat had come round the point, low in the water, its crew raising their hands. You wiped the soot from your palms onto your coat and wrote the time in the log, your hand steady except at the start of the line. Below, the sea kept doing what it does, lifting and dropping, and you found you did not mind it so much.
