Black handwritten script lettering on a white background reading 'Sometimes, the only way to stay sane is to go a little crazy', shown as a tattoo design with no body placement visible.

Script quote: sometimes, the only way to stay sane

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten script quote reads 'Sometimes, the only way to stay sane is to go a little crazy' across four lines on a plain white background. The lettering is drawn in black ink with a mix of thin and slightly heavier strokes, with looped ascenders and flowing connecting joins. No skin, shading or colour is present, so this is a design drawing rather than a photograph of a tattoo.

The kettle had been boiling for ten minutes when Marjorie finally pulled the plug on the whole business and walked out to the hallway in her slippers. Somebody had to say it. Nobody else in the Hartley house was going to, not with the twins fighting over the last of the cereal and the boiler knocking like a drunk at a door. She found her coat on the peg, the one with the torn pocket, and stood there with one arm in it, listening to the clatter of spoons in the kitchen as if the whole morning depended on it.

Then she did it. She took the marker from the drawer where the takeaway menus lived, wrote a note on the back of a gas bill in letters so loopy the twins would call them witchy, and pinned it to the fridge: Gone to the allotment. Back when I'm back. She did not feel sane. She felt like a woman who had remembered she owned a pair of wellies.

The allotment was four streets away and smelled of wet compost and somebody's illicit bonfire. Marjorie dug her fork into the cold earth of bed nine and laughed out loud at nothing, a sharp unfamiliar bark that sent a blackbird off the shed roof. A neighbour looked over the hedge. Marjorie waved a muddy glove at him and kept digging, grinning like a fool, until the sun came out and the knocking in her chest slowed to something she could breathe around.
