Marta had the letter half out of the mortar before she understood it was a letter at all. The gatehouse of Harrowby Keep had lost its roof to a storm in 1911 and nobody had bothered since, so the rain had got into everything, but the paper in the wall niche had been wrapped in oilcloth and tied with green thread. The hand on the outside was looped and fast, leaning forward as if the writer could not wait to reach the next word.

She carried it down the spiral stair to the clearing where the surveyor's van was parked and unfolded it on the bonnet. Inside, there was no greeting and no name. Only two lines, one above the other, each letter joined to the next so the pen never seemed to lift: Enjoy today, and beneath it nothing else.

Marta read it three times. She thought of the mason who had sealed the niche, the lord who had paid him, and the household that must have wanted something grander carved over a door they meant to keep. Someone had chosen the smallest possible sentence and hidden it where only a stranger would ever find it.

She folded it along its old creases and put it back inside her coat. Then she sat on the wet stone step, unscrewed her flask, and did exactly that for ten minutes, watching the light slide across the empty courtyard until the rain came back over the hills.
