Black handwritten script lettering on a white background reading 'the show must go on... All over the place... or something', a lettering design with no body placement shown.

Handwritten script quote: the show must go on

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a line drawing of a handwritten phrase in black script on a plain white background. The phrase reads 'the show must go on... All over the place... or something', arranged over four staggered lines. The strokes are monoline with smooth, connected letterforms and no shading or colour, so it reads as a lettering design rather than a photograph of skin.

Mind the trapdoor, love. It's been sulking since the Tuesday matinee, and the rail on the iron stairs is loose at the fourth step, so hold the brass and not the rope. Nobody's been paid to fix anything in this place since the Coronation. Come on up. You'll want to see the state of the flies before the house opens.

The night the roof gave way over the Marigold, Mr Harcourt was on the boards with a bottle of gin and a tenor who'd lost his voice in the second interval. Rain came straight through the fly gallery and drummed on the prompt desk like a bored drummer. Ada Pickering, who'd been a cloakroom girl until Tuesday, walked on in the mother's part with one shoe and a tea towel for a shawl. The orchestra was three bars behind, then four. A goat from the next-door menagerie got loose in the wings and took a bow of its own.

Nobody in the stalls knew what was meant to happen. They laughed where the script said weep and wept at the bit with the pantomime cow. Halfway through the last act the chandelier came down in a shower of wet plaster, and Ada simply stepped over it, sang the final note clean as a bell, and said the line we'd all been trained to say, the one about carrying on regardless.

I wrote it in the prompt book in pencil, the way you're supposed to: Show went on. All over the place. Or something. Then I went out front to count the takings, and the box office boy was stood there grinning with his cap in his hands, because the house had got up and cheered for twenty minutes, and not one of them could tell you what they'd seen.
