Script quote tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm rests on a patchwork quilt, showing two lines of thin, handwritten-style script in dark ink. The lettering is partly hard to read at this size. The photo is sepia-toned, so the ink and skin appear in soft browns and greys, with a shallow focus that blurs the bedding behind the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer the stove, you lot, the cut is iron tonight and I'll not have anyone's fingers going blue on my watch. The winter the Mercy froze at Hatton Lock, Nell Garrow was nineteen and sewing a quilt from every dress she'd outgrown. Her mother had told her a girl could stitch her whole life into cloth if she kept her needle moving.

The ice came up the cut in grey plates that rang like broken crockery. The lock-keeper's boy, Tobias, bet a penny he could walk to the wharf and back before the bell. Nell didn't stop him. She sat on the cabin step with the quilt across her knees and the stub of pencil from behind her ear, writing two lines in the margin of a bill of lading, the letters leaning over like reeds in a current. She didn't tell anyone what they said.

When Tobias came back, blue-lipped and proud, she didn't scold him. She unfolded the quilt and showed him the corner where she'd stitched those same two lines in thread the colour of wet slate, so small he had to lean close to read them. He leaned, and his breath fogged the cloth, and he read them out loud to the empty cut.

That's the trick of it, you see. Nobody reads a warning unless they come close enough to need it. Now, who's had the last of the toffee? Don't think I can't hear the tin rattling under the bunk. Outside the lock the ice kept talking to itself all night, and not one of us went out to listen.
