Close-up of a fine line script tattoo reading always on my mind, forever in my heart, on the upper thigh.

Script quote reading always on my mind on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a two-line handwritten script quote, reading always on my mind and forever in my heart, with the lettering running diagonally across the skin. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink, and the letters have a loose, cursive flow. A hand with dark nail polish rests at the left edge, and the pale skin and light fabric sit around the lettering.

Nell had written the same three lines on the back of the ferry timetable since Tuesday, and each time the wind off the Pentland Firth tore at the page before she reached her name. Her brother Tam said the boat would be late again. The boat was always late. Gulls worked the slipway, and the harbourmaster's dog slept in the one patch of sun beside the ropes. She folded the timetable twice, then once more, and tucked it into the lining of his oilskin coat where it hung on the nail by the door, so he would find it before the tide turned.

The letter had grown into something she could not post. Too many crossings out, too many smudged thumbprints from the pencil. She tried the opening again: Dear Robbie. Then she simply wrote what she had been avoiding for six winters, that the kettle still whistled for two cups, that she set his plate out of habit and let it go cold, that the nets in the shed had started to smell of nothing but damp.

Robbie came home on the Thursday boat with salt in his beard and a torn sleeve. He went to the nail by the door before he came looking for her. He read the back of the timetable first, where she had written small in pencil, the words crowded against the printed ferry times: Always on my mind, forever in my heart.

He didn't say anything. He just stood there dripping on the flagstones, then went through to the kitchen and put the kettle on for two.
