Script quote tattooed along both feet
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet wearing flip-flops are shown from above, with a line of cursive script tattooed along the side of each foot. The linework is fine and even, in black ink on light skin. The two lines of text sit diagonally along the arches, and the cropped composition places the feet against a dark green tiled floor.

Sit down, sit, the bench is only sore on the left side. You want the whole of it or the short cut? Good. The whole, then. Eleven years back a woman called Marisol came up this road in a Land Cruiser with a spare tyre already patched four times and two boys bouncing in the back. She was a cook, not a driver, and she drove like one, all nerves and salt on her hands.

The twins were fourteen and forever arguing over who told the better lie. Halfway to the salt pan the engine gave out, and she sat on the bonnet with a tin of peaches and a dented spoon, saying she had promised their mother the sea. Then she walked. Four hours in that heat with a jerrycan slapping her hip, and she never once let them see her stop. She gave her all to them, every coin from the tips at the diner, every shred of shade she could find.
When the boys finally reached the water, the older one stood on the sea wall with his arms out, daring the wind to knock him off. Marisol shouted at him to get down. He didn't. He only laughed and called back that he wasn't going to fall, not while she was watching from the car park with her heart in her throat. She told me later that was the moment she understood the bargain she'd made with herself was a good one.
They drove home the next morning with the windows down and the tyre holding. You can still see their tracks out on the salt, if you know where to look. The wind has flattened most of them, but there's one set that runs straight as a ruled line, and the rain has never managed to rub that one out.
