Script quote with cross on foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot resting on a white treatment bed, with a black script phrase tattooed across the top of the foot alongside a small cross at the left end. The lettering is a smooth, even black line with consistent weight and no shading. Colour is limited to the black ink against the skin tone, with part of another coloured tattoo visible at the right edge of the frame.

Mr Harold Pryce had painted the sign above the chemist's door for thirty-one years, and he had never once got the tail of a letter wrong until the morning his hand began to shake. He sat on the back step of the shop in Ashbourne Lane with a sable brush in one hand and a jar of gold leaf in the other, the June sun already hot on the cobbles, and tried to finish the loop of a single capital S. It wobbled. He tried again.

His daughter Ruth found him there at half past eight with the milk still on the step. She didn't say anything about the brush. She set down the basket and took the card from the bench, a sample he had made for the new bakery across the square, and read it aloud under her breath: the words he had written in an easy running hand, a small cross drawn before them like a full stop turned on its side. Every line was even. Nothing in it had shaken.
"You did that yesterday," she said.
"I did it in March," he said. "Yesterday I did it twice."
She sat beside him on the step and held out her palm, and after a while he put the brush in it, the way you hand over a key you no longer need. Across the road the bakery shutter rattled up. Somewhere a bicycle bell rang, twice, and then the square was quiet again except for the small steady sound of her pen moving over the back of the card, copying the words out clean in her own careful hand, so that whatever happened next, the line would hold.
