Black line drawing design of a script quote reading I think i'll miss you forever like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky, with silhouetted birds, shown on a white background.

Script quote with flying birds

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black script quote reads "I think i'll miss you forever like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky" across the centre of a white background. Five small black bird silhouettes in flight sit among the lines of text, with one more bird below the final line. The design is rendered in solid black ink with no greys or shading, and the flowing monoline lettering is the main feature of the composition.

Nell kept the crossing gate at Hollin Bridge the summer I was nineteen. Every April the swallows came back under the eaves of the waiting room, the same pair as the year before, I'd swear to it, and every morning she stood on the down platform with her tea going cold and said, 'Look at them, Tom, they've come all this way for a roof over a shut ticket office.' Then in September the nights drew in, her posting came through for Carlisle, and the birds went south without so much as a goodbye.

The last thing she said to me was up on the footbridge, with the first train of the day coming in underneath us. She said she'd miss me the way the stars miss the sun when it comes up over the fells. I laughed, because I was nineteen and didn't know the stars never miss anything. They just wait. They're up there the whole time, hung behind the glare, and they come back the minute it's dark.

Forty years I've been waiting on that dark. Every April I prop the waiting room door open so the swallows can find their way in, and every April I stand where she used to stand and watch them cut across the platform lamps. Mind your step on the bridge, son. The 6.10 is late, and I'm not going anywhere.
