Script lettering with two hearts
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a tattoo design of two lines of cursive script, reading Always on my mind and Forever in my heart. Two small outlined hearts sit to the left of the second line. The linework is black and fine, with flowing letterforms and no shading, on a plain cream background.

"No, not that line, Mr Hebden, it's too plain for your mother. Let me try it the way the vicar's wife does." He had wanted to say he was sorry about the money from the spring sale, about the heifer he sold without asking, about the door he slammed at Michaelmas hard enough to crack the glass. None of it would fit on a postcard, and Ada had written letters for half the parish long enough to know that most men could only manage a few words at a time. So she gave him the two lines he could carry. When he asked what the little hearts were for, she said they were for the parts he had left out.
The letter went into the box at the crossroads that evening, tucked in her own coat pocket against the cold. The post van took it before the lane closed under drift, and for three weeks Ada heard nothing from anyone at all. She kept the pen wet and the ink from freezing by the stove, and she did not ask after the Hebdens.
In April a card came up the lane in a child's hand, with a postmark from the valley and one line in pencil underneath: come home for tea. Ada read it twice by the window, then took her own pen and drew two small hearts beside the words before she sent it back down the road.
