Script quote with three outlined hearts
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a black script quote across the skin, reading Our paths may change as life goes on, but the bond between us remains forever strong. Below the text sits a row of three overlapping outlined hearts drawn in fine black linework. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the text fills most of the frame against a pale, softly lit background.

You are first in the bakery at half four, as always, and the ovens are already warm because Tomas left the back door propped with a sack of flour the night before. The dough is proving under damp cloths along the counter. You knead by feel, the way Mrs Okafor taught you before her hands gave out, and through the window the lamp at the corner of Fenwick Lane hums over an empty street.

Mira has been gone three years, to Leeds, to a job in a hospital kitchen where she said the bread was dreadful. For a while you wrote every week, then every month, then only at Christmas, and then not at all. Last Tuesday a parcel arrived with no return address, only an Aberdeen postmark and a loaf tin wrapped in brown paper. Inside was a card in her looping biro, and beneath a line you have read a dozen times since, three small hearts drawn with the edges overlapping, like biscuits cut from one sheet of dough.
You bake the rye she left taped inside the cupboard door, the one with treacle and too much salt, and you find you have remembered every measure. Nothing broke between you. It only went quiet, the way dough goes slow in a cold room, and it has been rising all along.
When the loaf comes out, you knock on its base and it answers hollow, exactly right. You cut the heel off hot, which she always said was a sin, and wrap the rest in paper for the post. Then you write her address in your own careful hand and stand in the doorway while the first van pulls up and the sky turns grey over the chimneys.
