You pull off the highway at the sign with the bent letters, because the fuel gauge is lying and the man at the last pump swore there was nothing for sixty miles. The station is a concrete box the colour of old bone. Above its door hangs a pair of antlers, bleached so pale they look like something drawn in chalk against the sky.

Inside, a woman with a grease pencil behind one ear sells you a bottle of water and a road map fifteen years out of date. She tells you the route past the salt flats still runs, only the bridge at Dunmore fell in. You ask how she knows. She taps the antlers on the counter as though they were a bell. "Stag came down out of the hills in the wet year. Walked straight across my dad's forecourt and wouldn't leave until we gave him a bucket of feed. Then he went off east, and the antlers were all that ever came back."

You laugh, because you assume she is teasing. She does not laugh. Outside, the heat lifts off the tarmac in wavering sheets, and something moves at the far edge of the scrub, tall and slow, the light running along it like wire. You drive east anyway, the old map folded on the passenger seat, and the road bends exactly where she said it would.
