Script word choice on the forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of the word choice written in flowing, joined script across the skin. The linework is thin and even, with the letters sweeping from left to right and rising at the end. The soft lighting and shallow focus keep the composition centred on the lettering, with a woven bracelet visible at the lower left.

Dear Ivy, I have been at the writing desk since breakfast, and the sea has gone from grey to pewter to something like tin, and still I have not decided whether to take the post at Harrowgate or stay on here at Mrs Pellow's with the damp in the back bedroom and the gulls on the roof. You will tell me I have already decided. You always could read my mind before I had finished thinking.

Mrs Pellow came up this morning with the rent book under her arm and a lemon cake she said was only the crumbs of yesterday's. She sat on the end of my bed and asked what I meant to do, and I said I had no idea, and she laughed at me the way she laughs at the fishermen who ask for more salt. Then she told me that when she was twenty she had been offered a fortune to go to Canada and had turned it down for a man who sold coal. She never once regretted the coal man, she said, though she had regretted the fortune every Tuesday since.

I have written the word on the back of the envelope three times now, the way you used to write your spelling words in a joined-up hand, looping the letters until they ran into each other. Choice. It looks so tidy when it is joined like that, as though it were one thing and not a door and a corridor and a second door. I think I will post this before I can rub it out. Tell me which way you would go, and then I will go the other way, which is what I have always done when you were right.
