Choose Love script on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads "Choose Love" in black connected script on the inner wrist, with a large looped C and L and smaller lowercase letters. The lines are even and monoline, with no shading, and the ink sits clearly on pale skin. The photo is taken close up at an angle, with the hand cropped at the top and a dark background on the left.

The lock keeper had gone home at four, so when the rain came sideways over Harrowby Cut it was my job to wind the paddles by hand. My fingers were numb to the wrist. Rotterdam had offered her a berth on a container feeder, three years at sea, good money. The Lily Mae was going to a broker in Leeds in the spring, and I had spent a week pretending I hadn't read the letter. Dad's logbook sat in the cabin under the stove, its spine taped twice. His last entry, in square capitals, said only: CHOOSE THE CREW YOU'D WAIT FOR AT A CLOSED LOCK. I had always taken it as advice about the tiller.
The top gate groaned open and the water dropped away beneath us. I walked down the towpath with the wet rope in my hands and said that I wasn't asking her to stay for the boat. She looked at me for a long moment, then at the holdall, then at the Lily Mae rising level with the path. She stepped aboard without a word and took the tiller before I could offer it.
That night I opened the logbook under the lamp and wrote the date beneath Dad's line. Then, in pencil so it could be rubbed out if I was wrong, I wrote her name beside mine.
