Script word ohana with infinity swash on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo reads 'ohana' in a flowing, cursive script, with the initial letter extended into a looping infinity-style swash that wraps above the word. It is drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading or fill. The photograph is a close, slightly angled selfie of the side of a torso, with a black bra visible at the top of the frame.

The ovens were already ticking when I reached the yard at ten to four, and Leilani was arguing with a sack of rye that had split on the step. She waved me over with a floury wrist. The first loaf of the day belonged to whoever arrived first, she said, and I had never once beaten her to it.

Ohana, she liked to tell the new starters, was the family you made at the bench. It was the people who stayed late when a batch collapsed, who covered for each other when a delivery van was stuck on the ring road. Nobody gets left behind, she'd say, tapping the flour off a tray. We had three ovens, a proofing cabinet that wheezed like an old dog, and a quiet lad called Tomasz who came in every morning with his hood up and never spoke until the rye was out.

One Tuesday the bell over the door stayed still. By half five the bench was crowded with trays and nobody was talking. Leilani wiped her hands, took the spare key from its hook, and walked out without her coat. We found Tomasz asleep on the loading bay step, his trainers soaked through, because the last bus had left him three streets from home and he hadn't wanted to knock.

We drove him back in the van with the heater roaring and the windows fogged, a warm roll in each of his hands. He didn't say much. He didn't need to. After that the back light stayed on until the first batch was out, and the first loaf of every morning went to the stool by the door, still hot, with nobody asking whose it was.
