Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol with the word family written in cursive script through its centre, shown on bare skin. Three small bird silhouettes sit on the left loop and two more on the right, drawn in solid black with clean, smooth linework. The tattoo is centred in a close crop of the lower back, with a patterned waistband and dark top visible below it.

The first time he told no one. The second time his daughter Nell was in the cab, and she counted the birds. Five swallows rode the bonnet, three on one side and two on the other. When the road curled into its loop they lifted, circled, and came down exactly where they had been. "They're keeping count," Nell said. "Of who?" Ibe asked. He had left his brother at the east well eleven years before, over a quarrel nobody could now remember. He drove out the next morning with a sack of figs and a second coil of rope.
At the east well his brother sat on the step with his boots off, as if he had been expecting a lift. Ibe climbed down. Above them the swallows settled along the rail, three on one side and two on the other, and they did not fly again until both men were back in the cab.
