Script word 'spiro' on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist showing the word spiro written in black script lettering across the skin. The linework is fairly fine and even, with a slight variation in weight along the flowing strokes. The image is black and white, and the soft focus and plain background keep attention on the lettering.

The line went slack at half past six, which meant the diver was on the bottom and would be there a while. Nell wound the spare around the bollard and watched the grey water in the lee of the breakwater, where the mooring chains of the Porthcarrow fleet lay under a skin of weed. Her uncle Ezra had gone down for the anchor shackle that had been working loose since March. He had taught her the signals when she was nine: two tugs for well, three for trouble, a long pull for come up now.

Her grandmother kept a Latin grammar on the windowsill of the net loft, with the word spiro penciled inside the cover under a list of verbs. Nell had asked what it meant, and her gran had said, I breathe, and then, because Nell was impatient, that it also meant I am still here, if you were the sort of person who needed a sentence to do two jobs. Gran had outlived two husbands and a stretch of coast that was now mostly car park, and she had never once been short of breath when it mattered.
The line gave two tugs, then nothing, then three. Nell's hands went cold on the rope. She set her heels against the bollard and waited, counting the way Gran had taught her, slow and even, the way you count when you have decided not to be frightened yet.
At sixty the water broke white by the steps. Ezra came up grinning, the shackle held over his head like a prize from a fair, and spat out his mouthpiece to shout something about the cold. Nell tucked the grammar deeper into her coat pocket and let out the breath she had been keeping since the line went slack.
