Script word tattoo on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script word is tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand that rests on another hand, with the lettering running diagonally across the skin. The linework is smooth and solid black with no shading, and the skin tone is warm against a grey fabric background. The composition is tight, with silver rings and bright yellow nails in the frame beside the wrist.

The tinsmith Oren had hammered his rings from spoons he'd stolen as a boy, and he wore them all the way across the salt road, clicking against his lantern whenever he stopped to rest. Dagny carried the water. She counted the skins each morning and each evening, and each evening there were fewer, so when the road bent north and the wind began to smell of wet stone, neither of them spoke about the distance left.

At the third dry well, Dagny took a stick of charred willow and wrote a word on the soft inside of her wrist, slowly, so the shape would hold. Oren asked her why she would mark herself with a thing that rubbed off. She said the keepers at Sallow Tank asked every traveller who walked with whom, and a plain answer was cheaper than a fight. He asked what word she'd chosen. She showed him, and he laughed, because it was the word his own father had used for the men who shared a cup in the mines, and he had not heard it spoken since he was small.
The keeper at Sallow Tank read the wrist, then looked at the two of them for a long time. He filled the skins without charge and asked for no coin. Oren never learned whether that was the word's doing or only the keeper's mood.
That night Oren lit the lantern and hung it from the cart's edge. The silver tracery threw small bright shapes across the sand, and Dagny turned her wrist up to the light and saw the word had already faded to a grey smudge. She licked her thumb and pressed it again, and it came back dark.
