Seated bull and lucky horseshoe on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A seated bull with curled horns and a long tail dominates the forearm, drawn in bold black linework with grey shading on its body. A small rose sits to the upper left of the bull, and a red-outlined horseshoe with a scrolled banner reading lucky sits below it. The blurred background and warm skin tones keep the focus on the tattoo, which uses mostly grey ink with red accents.

Dear Tom,

The bull was sitting in the middle of the road when we came over the rise, folded down on its haunches as if it had paid for the tarmac. Dad would have called it the most stubborn animal in Pima County. Ray pulled the truck up forty yards off and we just sat there with the engine ticking, waiting for it to get bored.
It didn't. Ray got out, lit a cigarette and walked the long way round with his hat in his hand, talking low the way he does to horses. The bull watched him with the patience of something that had seen a lot of heat come off a lot of asphalt. Its tail lay out behind it across the white line, curled at the end like a question mark. I counted the stones on the verge while I waited, then got tired of counting and thought about the rose on the fence post at the Dawsons' place, the one nobody waters, which keeps flowering anyway.
Ray came back smelling of smoke and grinning. He said the bull wanted a lift and had the only good shade for a hundred miles. We waited another hour. When it finally stood, slow as a deckchair, the road looked smaller without it.
I'm writing from the motel in Benson. There is a horseshoe nailed over the door, which Ray swears is for luck, and I've decided to believe him for one more night. Come and see us before the monsoon. Bring the good coffee.
Love, Jo
