Seated pin-up woman beside a tyre
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A seated pin-up woman with curled hair wears a dress and stockings with suspender straps, leaning on a large round tyre or wheel. A spanner lies on the ground at the lower edge, and a second round object sits behind her knee. The shading is soft and smooth, with strong contrast between the highlights on the skin and fabric and the darker tones of the stockings and wheel.

Ada had the wheel off the Hollis lorry before the foreman finished his tea, and he stood in the mouth of the bay with the mug going cold in his hand, watching her knock the rim loose with the heel of her palm. "Nobody said a lass couldn't," she said, not looking up. He had said it in March, and again in April, and she had gone on sweeping the oil floor and learning the names of things.

The war had emptied Harrow Road of men, and the garage had filled with what was left: a colonel's saloon with a cracked windscreen, two Army trucks that never came back for their papers, and Mrs Pennock's little van, which she paid for in pennies and wanted checked every Friday. Ada could hear a bad valve before anyone else could see it. She knew the spanner by its weight, the way it sat behind the bench beneath the calendar with its curling girl in a striped apron. The calendar had hung there since before her. Nobody liked to take it down.
On the Saturday the depot sent a lorry with a split tyre and a driver who swore he would wait. Ada rolled the wheel in herself, levered the bead, and found the nail, a tenpenny thing bent like a question. She drove it out with the spanner, sealed the tube with a patch from a tin of solution gone thick as honey, and had it back on the rim before the driver had finished his cigarette.
When he had gone, she took the calendar down and turned it over on the bench. On the blank back she wrote the day's date, the lorry's number and the words Wheel refit, one man's share, in pencil so it could be rubbed out. Then she hung it up again, face out, and went to wash her hands.
