Pin-up on a Vespa with red flowers on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A traditional style tattoo covers the upper arm, centred on a pin-up woman in a polka dot bikini seated on a Vespa scooter with her hand raised to her hair. Bold black outlines define the figure, scooter and flowers, with grey shading on the scooter body and wheel. Red flowers with green leaves surround the central scene, and the colour ink is applied on a plain background of skin.

The scooter came into Harry Penhaligon's yard on a Tuesday with its front wheel bent like a question mark, and behind it, pushing it rather than riding, came a woman in a red headscarf who said she had three weeks of summer left and no intention of spending them walking. Harry knew the type from the seafront. He also knew the machine, a grey one with a single headlamp, because he had rebuilt its twin for a man who went to Naples and never sent for it.

He straightened the wheel on the bench while she smoked on the yard wall and told him about the coast road, a lorry that had taken the bend on the wrong side, and the dust that came off the cliff path and settled in your teeth. She talked the way people talk when they have been alone with a problem too long. Harry listened with a spanner in his hand and found he did not want the job finished.
The wheel took two days. On the third morning she came back and found the grey panels polished and two red flowers he had dabbed onto the nose in enamel paint, meant only to be temporary. "You can't ride a thing like that without it looking like it means something," she said. He said it was just paint. She said most things were just paint until somebody decided otherwise, then she rode off up the hill with one hand lifted to hold her hair against the wind.
Harry kept the tin of red enamel on the shelf after that. Every summer he left a single flower on the front of whichever scooter came in needing him most, and nobody ever asked him why.
