Pin-up woman with ukulele on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A pin-up style woman with short wavy hair, a white flower above one ear and a lei around her neck sits on a ukulele and wears a pale hula-style skirt. The shading is smooth and painterly, with soft gradients on the skin tones and fine detail in the hair, face and instrument. Warm peach, brown and red tones dominate, set against the wearer's skin and a striped sleeve.

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since seven, and by eleven the tarpaulins over the vintage stalls sag like wet sails. You have sold nothing but a chipped enamel brooch and a bag of buttons. Then the ukulele arrives in a cardboard box tied with string, and when you lift the lid the smell of old varnish and sea salt comes up to meet you.

The woman painted on the body looks back with red lips and a white flower pinned above one ear. Someone has set her on the instrument itself, the lei loose around her neck, her pale grass skirt fanned out like bleached paper. The seller, an old man who keeps tapping an unlit cigarette against his thumb, says it came from Honolulu by way of a Margate boarding house, and that his late wife used to play it on the pier. You don't believe him. You pay anyway, because the price is the cost of a cup of tea and the rain has got down your collar.
Back at your pitch you wipe the case with your sleeve and find a card tucked under the strings, pencilled in a careful hand: Keep her dry. She likes the evenings. The market lights come on one by one through the wet, and a busker two pitches down starts a slow song in a key you almost know.
You strum once, badly. The strings ring out bright and a little flat, and across the cobbles a woman in a yellow mac stops, turns, and starts to sing. By nine the rain has stopped and you have not sold a single thing, yet you are not in any hurry to pack up.
