Stretching cat outline on skin

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of a cat stretching upwards, with closed eyes, a small nose, whiskers and a raised front paw. The linework is thin and uneven in places, giving a hand-drawn feel, with no shading or fill. The black ink sits on a close crop of pale skin with soft natural light and no background detail.

The last tent of Pell's Travelling Marvels had canvas patched in four colours, and the only performer still paid on time was a grey cat called Dumpling who slept on the ringmaster's hat. Nobody remembered where she came from. She arrived the winter the elephant was sold, walked straight up the caravan ramp, and sat on the bench as if the bench had been waiting for her.

Mr Pell did not like cats, but he liked the crowds that came when she stretched. Each evening before the band struck up, she rose from the hat, reached one front paw toward the rafters with her eyes shut, and held it there as if the whole tent were a yawn she had been saving. The children in the back rows went quiet. Farmers who had come to jeer went home with coins in their pockets and no memory of what they had paid for.

Then the bank in Cwmbran called the loan in, the rigging was sold for scrap, and by October there were only eleven people and one cat left. Pell sat in the empty ring with the hat in his lap. Dumpling climbed up beside him, stretched long from her nose to the tips of her tail, and looked at the cold stars through the gap in the canvas.

He understood then that the stretch had never been for the audience. It was what a thing does when it has finished holding itself small. He opened the gate of the last wagon and let her go. She went up the hill without looking back, paw first, the way she had come in. The tent came down the next morning, and some say a grey shape still walks the lane behind the fairground at dawn, lifting one foot to the sky as though to test the air.
