Seed germination sequence on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows five sequential stages of a seed germinating, arranged in a row from left to right. Each stage is drawn in thin black linework, with the shell opening, roots forming and a shoot growing taller until the final seedling has two leaves. The ink is black with no colour or shading, set against pale skin in a plain indoor setting.

In the monastery at Hollin Cross, Brother Osric kept a bowl of dry beans on the sill of the scriptorium window, because the old abbot had said a man who could not wait for a bean to split would never wait for God. Each morning he tipped the bowl, counted what had changed, and wrote the number in the margin of his psalter.

The novice Edda came in one wet March with a cough and no family to speak of, and was given the bowl to mind while she mended the shelves. She laid the beans on damp cloth, pressed the cloth into a shallow dish and checked them each evening with a fingernail. First one split its skin like a chick breaking its shell, then a pale root hooked down into the cloth, then a stalk pushed up bent at the top like a question.

Osric said nothing when she brought him the dish. He lifted one seedling to the candle and turned it slowly. "It has forgotten it was a bean," he said at last. "Good. Now it must learn to be a leaf." Then he sent her down to the lower terrace with a hoe and a sack of ash.

By Lady Day the terrace was green, and Edda pressed the last bean into the soil with her thumb. The shell opened, the root went down into the dark where nobody would count it, and Osric, who had counted everything, went back to his psalter and left the margin blank.
