"Self Love Club" lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words SELF LOVE CLUB written in uppercase, hand-drawn black capitals with slightly uneven strokes. The letters are spaced widely across a horizontal line in the centre of a plain white background. The linework is solid black with no shading or colour, and the composition is simple and centred.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Pryce wanted the sign to look honest rather than fancy, so I took the stubby brush I keep for ferry names and laid out SELF LOVE CLUB in black enamel on a square of plywood. The committee had met on a Tuesday in the back room of the Methodist hall, five women and one very old man called Vernon, and they had argued for forty minutes about the name. Vernon said it sounded like a gym for hermits. Bev, who chaired everything, said the name stayed, and she said it in the voice she uses for bin rotas.

I painted the letters by hand because a printed sign would have looked like it belonged to somewhere with a car park. The strokes came out uneven. The L leaned on the E like it was tired, and the S on SELF sagged a bit at the bottom, so I spaced the words wide to give them room to breathe. I was about to wipe the S and start again when Vernon leaned over my shoulder and said, quite seriously, that it looked exactly like him after a Christmas dinner, and he would take it.
I nearly left it there, the way some people leave a crooked picture frame on the wall because the nail is already in. Instead I sealed it and hung it on the hall door myself. On Thursday I walked past and found a second board propped beside the first, with CLUB written on it in biro, underlined twice, and a note tucked into the frame that read: Mine next, same wonky letters, please.
