Selfish Machine script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of an arm with the words Selfish Machine written in cursive script across the inner wrist and lower forearm. The linework is smooth and uniform in solid black ink, with the letters sloping upwards and the capital M in Machine given a looped flourish. The skin is lightly toned and the plain pale background keeps the focus on the lettering.

Tomas Wrenfield had kept the brass engine in his shop window on Gantry Lane for eleven winters, and in all that time it had never once run for anyone but itself. Customers brought in cracked lamps and dead music boxes, and it ticked over their heads, polished and indifferent, while they waited. The lamplighters called it the selfish machine, though only once their ladders were stacked and the cobbles had gone quiet.

The trouble began on a wet Thursday, when a girl named Nell Ashby set her dead father's pocket watch on the counter and asked for nothing except the time back. Tomas said the gears would need a week. That night the machine, which had always kept pace with the gaslights across the lane, stopped dead at midnight and would not start again. Tomas tried oil, tried the file, tried shouting at it. The only answer was a slow click, deliberate as someone counting coins they meant to keep.
On the seventh night Nell came back without being asked. She sat on the stool in front of the glass and read out everything her father had lent in his life, every debt and borrowed shilling and promise made over a bar, and the machine began to turn its wheels against each one. By dawn it had ground out a single small brass key and set it on the counter where the watch had been. Tomas picked the key up and found it warm, and the machine started ticking again, a little faster than before, as if it had just been paid.
