Semicolon and cross on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo on the inner wrist shows a semicolon beside an upright cross, with the cross set slightly higher and to the right of the punctuation mark. The linework is solid and even, with the cross drawn in a slightly heavier stroke than the semicolon's dots and tail. The forearm is shown in warm skin tones against a blue and grey patterned background.

The ferry didn't run again today, so I have had time to think about the mark you left on the kitchen table. You had written "I am staying" and then, instead of a full stop, you put a dot over a little hooked tail. Mrs Okafor at the post office says that is a semicolon, and that it means the sentence goes on past where it seems to stop. I have decided you meant the sentence was not finished.
The customs hut at Vell Bridge keeps its ledger under a brass cross bolted to the desk, because the first clerk was a deacon who thought a border needed a blessing. Every night I sign off the day's papers beneath it. Yesterday a man with a grey dog asked me to stamp his passport and then to write something in the margin, anything at all. I wrote "Still travelling" in my smallest hand, and he laughed and said it was the only honest entry anyone had made for him in a year. I think about that when I look up at the cross.
Your stamp is in the top drawer with your name still on the label. I haven't used it, and I won't until you tell me what comes after the mark. Write back and tell me the rest of the sentence. When the river is calm enough I will walk the towpath to the far bank, and we can finish it together, one word at a time, with the ledger open between us.
