Semicolon designs in three arrangements

Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows three semicolon-based designs, each labelled beneath: a single semicolon, a trinity arrangement of three semicolons around a central dot, and a larger radial arrangement of six semicolons around a central dot. The marks are solid dark shapes with a clean, uniform edge and no shading. They are set on a plain white background with the labels in a sans-serif font.

Dear Tomas,

The snow came over the Gallow Pass on Tuesday and stayed, so the mules are wintering in the lower field and I have nothing to do but walk the cairns with Ingrid's boy. The old men here say the stones at the top were set by a shepherd who could not bear a full stop, so he left a pause on every one. Each cairn carries a small dark mark like a comma with its head set above, and where the wind has scoured them you can still see a ring of six around a central dot, as if the sun had been drawn there and then abandoned.

Ingrid's boy counts them every morning. Last week he reached fourteen and said the number was wrong, there should be seven. When I asked where the seventh was, he pointed at the mist and said it was the one not finished yet. I told him that was nonsense, though I have thought about it since. A semicolon is a stop that declines to end anything. It holds the sentence open for the next clause, as if the writer had not yet decided what they meant.

Yesterday the cloud lifted for an hour and I climbed to the highest mark. Six strokes around the dot, every one curling the same way, as though the whole thing turned slowly on its own axis. The sun sat low and white behind the ridge, and for a moment the shadows of the marks lay across the snow, and I could read them. I will not pretend I understood. I stood there until my fingers stopped working, and I am writing this with them still stiff.

Write back soon and tell me the mill still runs. I will be here until the thaw, counting.

Love, Maren
