Small semicolon tattoo with purple, blue, yellow and pink watercolour-style splashes on the inner wrist.

Semicolon with watercolour splashes on wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small semicolon sits on the inner wrist, with the dot and the comma body in solid black ink. Soft washes of purple, blue, yellow, pink and red surround the black shapes, blending into the skin at the edges. The tattoo is centred in a close, slightly angled photo against a plain pale skin background.

The rain had got into the type trays again, so I spent the first hour of the Saturday market wiping each little lead letter on my apron before I let anyone near them. Dad always said a stall in Kirkgate was half weather and half luck, and he was right on both counts, though he never said which half you could do anything about.

Ruth from the bookbinder's pitch came over with a tea in a paper cup and a tin of watercolours she had been meaning to get rid of. Nobody buys a semicolon, she said, looking at the sorts I'd laid out on the green baize. Nobody knows what it's for. I told her a semicolon is a sentence that has decided not to stop yet, and she laughed at me, then took the lid off the tin anyway.

By noon she had brushed purple and blue and a splash of yellow across a sheet of grey card, and I pressed a sorted semicolon into the wet paint. The dot came up black and clean. The comma came up a little crooked, the way the best things do when nobody has checked them against a ruler. A man in a yellow cagoule bought it for his sister, whose birthday was on Monday, and he said she had a habit of starting things and never quite finishing them.

I wrapped it in brown paper and wrote on the back, to be continued. The rain ran off the awning in a line the colour of the wash, and behind me Ruth was already tipping the last of the paint down the drain, not quite sure yet what she had made.
