Send and me script tattoos on two heels

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of two bare feet viewed from behind, with the word send tattooed on the left heel and me on the right heel. The lettering is small, dark and in a joined, slanted script with clean, even linework and no visible shading. The plain dark floor and soft lighting keep the focus on the two words, which sit side by side.

The packet came in April, wrapped in brown paper and tied with garden twine, with no letter inside. There was only the label in Ada's furious capitals, and the seeds rattled like dried peas when I shook them. Foxgloves, the white kind Mother grew by the back gate before the frost took them and we never got them back.

I wrote on the back of a seed catalogue because it was the only paper in the kitchen that wasn't a bill. Two words, and the rest of the card left blank. I did not add please, because Ada would have read it as pleading, and she would have been right, because that was exactly what it was. Then I posted it from the box at the bottom of Church Lane before I could fold it into a longer, sadder letter.

The summer went by without a word. Mr Pemberton's boy cut the verge twice and asked after the rain. Then in July I came out to bring in the washing and found a row of white spires standing in the gap between the step and the wall, bent a little towards the gate as though they had been walking up the path to find me.

I stood there in my socks for a long time. The paving was warm, the post van was late, and the argument we had been having since Mother's funeral had been settled by a packet of seeds and two words in my own handwriting, sent back to me the only way Ada has ever said anything true.
