Send and me script on both heels
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows bare feet viewed from behind, standing on carpeted stairs, with a small word tattooed on each heel. The left heel reads send and the right reads me, both in thin black handwritten-style script. The lettering is simple and evenly spaced, and the image uses only black ink with the warm tones of the skin and carpet around it.

The ferry came over twice a week in those years, and the postmistress on Carrick Skerry was the only one who knew which days the mail would be lost to weather. I sorted it on the kitchen table with the stove ticking beside me, pencil behind my ear, reading the hands before I read the names. Most were tidy. Gran's had gone shaky. Only one was a child's, pressed so hard the letters dented the paper.

The envelope was addressed to a boatman, Tam Lennox, at the harbour on Ness, and the child had written on the flap in a looping hand that leaned into the wind: send me. Nothing else. No stamp, no return address. I turned it over twice, as if the back might explain itself, then set it aside and carried on with the parcels for the lighthouse.
Tam had been dead a fortnight. Everyone on the skerry knew it, and the child, I supposed, had either not been told or had been told and refused to believe it. I kept the envelope in my apron pocket all afternoon. When the ferry bell rang at four I walked down to the slip with it and found the girl already at the rail, both hands buried in her coat, watching the water as if it owed her an answer.
I gave her the letter. She read the flap, then looked up at me with the calm of someone who had expected exactly this. "Then you'll have to send me yourself," she said, and stepped aboard before the ferryman could object, and I stood on the wet stones until the boat was only a smudge against Ness and the post bag was empty in my hands.
