Serif quote tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a four-line quotation in black serif lettering across the forearm, running diagonally from upper left to lower right. The letters are solid black with clean, even edges and no shading. The warm, slightly dim skin tone and the dark frame around the photo make the black ink stand out clearly.

Dear Nell,

The allotment gate still sticks at the bottom hinge, so I lifted it the way Dad used to and it swung in as if nothing had changed. The runner beans have gone to string on the wires. Mum's sweet peas had seeded themselves all along the path, and I stood there with a carrier bag for a good ten minutes before I could bring myself to pull anything up.
In the shed I found the biscuit tin under the seed trays, the one with the Scottish shortbread lid. Inside were her index cards, eleven years of them, every sowing date in pencil. On the last card, the one from March, she'd copied something out in her careful schoolteacher hand: so it is better to speak, remembering we were never meant to survive. No author, no note. Just those lines, and underneath, a row of beans drawn as little ticks.
I thought you'd want to know before the solicitor comes. I've left the card in the tin for you. I don't think she meant it as a sad thing. I think she meant it as instructions for the spring, the way you'd leave someone a recipe.
I'm going to dig the potato bed on Saturday, if the rain holds off. Bring your gloves. The left gate needs its hinge oiled, and I've decided we're keeping the sweet peas.
Love, Ruth
