Set of geometric symbols and knots on a flash sheet
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of eight black line-drawn symbols arranged in two columns on a pale grey wood-effect background. The designs include a triskelion, a set of concentric circles, a single spiral, two interlaced knot motifs and two angular emblems. The linework is solid and uniform in weight, with no shading and no colour.

Mr Hollis wanted the cross drawn before the lorries came on Monday, so I knelt in the wet grass of St Brannoc's with a roll of tracing paper and a 2B pencil, and the drizzle kept working its way under the edge of the sheet. The stone had been standing since before the parish had a name for itself. Its arms were worn soft, but the carvings on the shaft were still sharp enough to feel with a thumb: three bent legs turning round a hub, a ring with a hole in its middle, a spiral that wound in until it ran out of stone.

Verger Tierney stood under the yew with his hands in his coat pockets and told me the masons had cut the patterns so anything wicked walking them would lose its way. I said I thought the masons had been bored and wanted something to do with their chisels. He laughed and said that was the more likely story, and then he didn't say anything else for a long while. The rain thinned out. Through the tracing paper, every knot showed its path, over and under, over and under, except for one at the base where the carver had stopped halfway and left two loose ends pointing at the grass like a question nobody had answered.
I was meant to copy what was there, so I copied the loose ends. Then, because my pencil was already moving and nobody was watching, I drew the loop closed, a neat figure that made the whole thing hold together. I sat back and looked at the difference between the two sheets for a long time before I decided which one to keep.
On Monday the lorry took the cross away in straps. I rolled the original sheet tight and put it in the drawer with the rest of my work. The copy with the closed knot went to Mr Hollis in an envelope, and the one with the open ends stayed on the table, held down under the teapot.
