Sewing spool and needle on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A sewing spool with wound thread sits at the top of the design, with a needle hanging from a loose thread below it. The linework is fine and dark, with hatched shading on the spool's wound thread and rim, and the needle is drawn as a thin solid line. The design is in black and grey on pale skin, set against a plain white background.

The sail had split along the leech in the night, and by first light Maud Pargeter had the canvas spread across the loft floor like a dropped sky. Her father's hands were too knotted now for the heavy palm, so the work was hers, and so was the wind coming off the harbour mouth, sharp enough to lift the corners. She threaded her needle on the first try, which she counted as a good omen, and drew the waxed linen tight from the spool on the bench.

Tom Ashby came up the stairs two at a time, cap in hand. The Ellen Rose had gone out at four with her father and her brother aboard, and the glass was falling. Maud did not look up. 'Tell me how long,' she said. 'Till the tide turns, or till the wind does?' 'Both, Miss, the skipper says.' She nodded and pushed the needle through, the small pull of the thread a sound she knew better than her own name. Each stitch was a hard little knot of work, backstitched twice where the old seam had gone soft with salt.
The spool emptied faster than she expected. She wound the last of the thread into a loose tail, let the needle dangle from it, and went to the window. Below, the breakwater was grey with spray. She took the sail's corner in both fists and worked along the seam while the light went flat and copper over the water, one stitch, then another, until the cloth lay whole again under her hands.
When the Ellen Rose came round the wall at dusk, her red sail was bellied out clean and strong. Maud was already on the quay with the sailcloth over her arm. She had left the needle hanging from the loft hook, swinging in the draught from the open door, the thread running down the wall like a plumb line to nowhere in particular. Her brother raised a hand from the tiller. Maud lifted the mended corner so he could see the seam.
