Sheep grazing beneath a tree on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows three sheep of different sizes grazing on a small grassy mound beside a bare, branching tree with a canopy of scattered yellow-green dots. The sheep and trunk are drawn in dark outline with simple shading, and small green strokes mark the grass. The design is mainly black ink with green and brown accents, set against a plain background of skin and a slip-on shoe.

Dad had planted the old ash tree by the caravan field the year I was born, so the tent could always be pegged in its shade. It was bare that autumn, black branches clawing at a sky the colour of wet cardboard, but in the evenings the wind shook loose the last yellow leaves and they settled on the grass like scattered pennies. The sheep grazed under it every night while we sat on the steps and added up what the week had brought in. It was never enough. It was never quite nothing either.

On the last evening before the lorry was sold, I walked them out to the mound by the tree and let them crop the little green patch that had survived the drought. Tuppence, now as big as the others, nudged my pocket for a nut I did not have. Mam came out with the lamp and stood at the gate without speaking. We counted them together, three, the way she always had, and for once the number came out right.
