Three sheep under a tree on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three simple sheep grazing on a small grassy mound, with a bare brown tree on the left and clusters of green dots suggesting leaves. The linework is thin and even in brown, with green used for the foliage and tufts of grass. The composition is small and centred on the ankle area, with the foot and a canvas shoe filling the frame.

Morag had counted the sheep twice before the ferry left, and twice more on the slipway, and still there were only three of them on the mound above Scarra Bay: the old ewe with the cracked horn, the lamb that never stopped bleating, and the grey wether that wandered off whenever the wind turned. The rest of the flock had gone to the mainland in March with Dougal's brother, who had sold the lot for less than the fuel had cost him.

The hawthorn at the top of the field was the only tree on the island that stood upright. Everything else bent east, away from the weather, and the wind had worn the trunk of this one down to a grey stripe of bark. Morag sat under it with her back against the wood and her boots in the wet grass, eating a heel of bread, and watched the three animals graze as if the afternoon had been arranged for them.
She had expected the island to be empty. It was, mostly. But the sheep kept their small routine on the grassy hump of ground, nosing up tufts of green and lifting their heads to look at the sea, and she found she could not leave them to it.
When the tide turned she walked down to the shore with the ewe trotting at her heels, the lamb tangled in her skirt and the wether far behind. At the boat she looked back once. The mound was bare now, only the tree, its crown a loose spray of green dots against the sky, and she understood that the sheep had been waiting for someone to come and count them properly.
