Short black lettering on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with the word HE>i tattooed in thin black letters along the middle finger. The lettering is solid and uniform, with no shading, and sits against the skin with the finger held up in front of a grey car steering wheel. The warm, slightly washed-out photo lighting keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The Caledonia Star is still tied up in the Clyde and I am still on her galley, scraping the grill at five every morning like it owes me money. Mrs Pryce from the purser's office asked after you again. I told her you'd gone south to work the tugs, which is true enough if you count the one you were on for a fortnight in March.
Your postcard came with HE>i scrawled across the back in your square capitals, and I laughed through a whole shift. Nobody else on this boat would know it means you are ahead of me again. Harry the bosun thinks I've gone soft. I told him it was a code and he said everything is a code with Scots. We started it at school for who got the last bun, remember? Greater than, the arrow. Who was higher in the queue. I still say you cheated on the Latin test.
Sunday we dock at Stornoway and I'll walk up the hill past the harbour wall with the bread order. If you're there, leave the arrow in the salt on the step. I'll know it's you, and I'll know which of us is the greater this time, because I've decided it's me.
