Small pineapple tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand held up in a peace sign against a plain dark grey background shows a small pineapple tattoo on the side of the index finger. The pineapple is drawn in simple black linework with a grid pattern across the body and a spiky crown at the top. The photograph is evenly lit with the hand in sharp focus, and the tattoo occupies only a small area of the frame.

Across the aisle her nephew Kenneth was counting coins into a biscuit tin with the gravity of a bank clerk. "Nobody buys these in this weather," he said. "They want bananas. Bananas don't need explaining." Dorothy said a pineapple was just a banana that had got ideas above its station, and he laughed, and she let him think he'd won.

Ronan Pike, who had sold her the first crate forty years back, used to say the pattern on a pineapple's skin was a map of a city nobody had finished building. Dorothy had never believed him until the lamps came on over the stalls and she saw the diamond squares of the rind catching the light, each one a little street with its own shine.

She cut the bruised fruit into rings, wrapped the best slice in greaseproof paper, and pressed it into Kenneth's palm. "Eat it slow on the walk home. Crowns are for kings and nobodies, and we are neither." He ate it under the awning while the rain drummed on the tin roofs, and the market lights went out one by one until only the pineapple barrow was still glowing.
